Update your skills to better support children and young people with SEND

Over 1 in 10 of children and young people in schools in Hertfordshire have SEN Support and 8,338 children and young people have an Education Health and Care Plan – so if you work with children and young people it’s very likely that you are working with children with SEND.

It is therefore essential that you have the skills and knowledge to confidently support children or young people with SEND and their families and/or carers.

The SEND Strategy Programme identified that practitioners in non-SEND specialist services (early help and safeguarding teams) wanted more information about how to identify and respond to SEND in their work with families.

As a result a team of practitioners from across health, education and social care, together with parent carers of children with SEND, have been designing e-learning modules to achieve this.

The result will be a suite of 3 modules and a resource hub, for any practitioner to access, no matter what organisation they work for.

Resources are already available   in the Hub for practitioners to use and Module 1, An Introduction to SEND, is available on iLearn. and can be accessed by partners in the following ways:

Option 1: Partners who already have access to HCC iLearn

  • Partners that already have iLearn accounts will be able to access the module(s) and resources free of charge
  • Partners can request monthly reports of staff to confirm who has completed the module by contacting CS L&D Team via CSTraining@hertfordshire.gov.uk

Option 2: Partners who have their own online Learning Management System (LMS)

  • Partners that have their own LMS can contact Mohan Ballard, who will be able to share the module file and links to resources (free of charge)
  • Partners upload these files on to their own LMS for staff to access
  • Partners will be able to report on who has completed the module following their own processes

Option 3: Partners can request access to HCC iLearn

Option 4: Module uploaded on to Families First Portal

  • eLearning modules can be uploaded on Families First Portal
  • All partners can access FF Portal free of charge
  • There are no reporting functions on the site, so partners will not be able to confirm who has completed

Our ambition is for all who work with CYP with SEND to access the same training, so we can use the same language and confidently support families with CYP with SEND, no matter what our employing organisation.  We would be happy to work with your learning and development team to see how we can work together to achieve this ambition.

Let us know what you think and if you have ideas of what is needed in the Resource Hub: sendstrategy@hertfordshire.gov.uk
